Most bonsai styles try to recreate a miniature version of old trees as found in nature by incorporating old tree characteristics into the design.

Why Bonsai Styles.

Trees are one of God’s most impressive creations, and bonsai growers throughout the world have been inspired by these masterpieces to create their own bonsai masterpieces. In his book, “Bonsai Techniques 1”, John Naka starts the section on different styles in bonsai by saying that: “It is fascinating to make a study of nature’s trees and visualise bonsai shapes”.

Not all trees in nature have enough visual impact to inspire a new style. Although bonsai originated in China, the Japanese have had the biggest influence on the bonsai concept and philosophy as we know it today. Likewise, Western bonsai growers, especially the Americans, have been influenced by their environment and culture to develop a new way of expressing this oriental art-form.

Similarly, Charles Ceronio created new indigenous African styles like the Baobab, the Pierneef, the Flat Top, the Bushveld, the Wild fig, and others as the climate and tree shapes are in Africa totally different to those found in the Northern Hemisphere.
However, we understand that conforming to modern guidelines is not necessary for everyone and that nature produces a vast array of oddities and curiosities. Ultimately it’s up to you how you want your bonsai shaped.

If have wired your Bonsai tree, we will also remove it for you as part of the service without extra charge if you do not want to remove it yourself.

“The art of Bonsai is much more than just planting a tree in a pot. There must be a feeling, a love for nature, especially a love for trees, and a state of mind which gives great contentment and a fulfillment in creating your own Bonsai” By Doug Hall.

How often does my bonsai need shaping and styling?

Unwanted growth can be removed at any time that it occurs. How fast a tree grows can vary enormously from species to species.

Will my bonsai ever be finished?

Bonsai is a living art, a tree will never stop growing, therefore the Bonsai Tree is never finished.
It will however slow down as it ages and matures requiring less frequent shaping and styling.
