Pinus thunbergii
Family: Pinaceae.
Common names: Japanese black pine, kuromatsu.
Pinus thunbergii is a medium to large evergreen conifer native to the coastal regions of Japan and South Korea. It typically reaches a height of 20–30 m in nature but remains much smaller in cultivation, especially when used for bonsai or ornamental landscaping. The tree has a rugged, picturesque appearance with a broad, irregular crown and thick, grayish-black bark that becomes deeply fissured with age.
The needles are stiff, dark green, and arranged in pairs, each 7–12 cm long, giving the tree a dense, rich texture. The cones are ovoid to conical, 4–7 cm long, and mature to a dull brown color after two years. Adapted to coastal environments, this species tolerates wind, salt spray, and poor, sandy soils, making it an excellent choice for seaside planting and erosion control.
Popular for Bonsai trees.
Sowing instructions: Sow seeds in late winter or early spring in deep seed trays or pots using a well-drained, sandy soil mix. For improved germination, stratify the seeds by placing them in moist sand or vermiculite at 2–5°C for 4–6 weeks before sowing. Sow about 1 cm deep and keep in a bright, cool location. Water moderately—allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, but do not let it dry out completely. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual containers and grow in full sun, protecting young plants from frost and excessive moisture until well established.
