The Wild Olive (Olea europaea subsp. africana), often called Olienhout, is a resilient, indigenous evergreen tree found across Africa, known for its dense canopy, silvery-green leaves, and small, purple-black edible fruits. Thriving in full sun and, once established, highly drought-resistant, it is a versatile, low-maintenance choice for gardeners. It is also widely used for attracting birds, in bonsai, and for its medicinal leaves.

• Appearance: A small to medium-sized tree, 5 to 12 meters, sometimes up to 18 meters. with a rugged trunk and dense, rounded canopy.

• Habitat: Naturally adapted to varied environments, including rocky hillsides and woodlands, making it highly drought-, frost-, and wind-tolerant.

• Fruit: Produces small, thinly fleshy, black, or dark purple berries that are edible and beloved by birds.

• Frost-, drought-, and wind-resistant, the wild olive has beautiful wood for furniture, and is regarded as a small-fruited subspecies of the commercial olive.
